DISCOVER YOUR PERFECT OPAL NECKLACE
Opal necklaces are one of the most exquisite ways you can wear beautiful gem quality Australian opal. Symbolising love, passion and beauty in many cultures around the world, opal is a stunning natural gift from the earth that features eye-catching colours, patterns and shapes. And like a snowflake or fingerprint, it's hard to find two of these stones that look exactly the same, making them truly unique and special.
So what type of necklaces with opal can you buy and which is the best one for you? We've all been there - online shopping page after page of beautiful jewellery but confused about the best piece and what you should pay. And when it comes to opal necklace pendants, there can be endless designs, colours and price points to consider. Here are our top tips for finding that perfect piece of jewellery you'll want to wear every day or gift to someone special in your life.
Select an opal you love
Opals are dazzling and beautiful gemstones that are versatile and suit all types of jewellery. You will find them in classic and elegant settings where the stone is the star of the show, and also in more intricate and decorative designs with accent diamonds and other coloured gemstones that complement their vibrant and fiery hues. There are various types of opals from Australia, each with their own unique characteristics, value and charm. The most well-known kinds used in necklaces and pendants are:
White Opals: Featuring a milky white or light-coloured body tone, often with flashes of vibrant pastel-tones, these gems are known for their delicate beauty and are frequently used in both gold and silver settings.
Crystal Opals: Renowned for their transparent body tones and neon-like colour range, these opals are also very popular for jewellery of all kinds, particularly necklaces where, when worn against the skin, their true brilliance really shines.
Black Opals: Valuable and rare, black opals necklaces are characterised by their dark body tone and vivid play of colour, and are usually set in high quality yellow or white gold or platinum, oftentimes with accent diamonds.
Boulder Opals: Uniquely formed in Queensland ironstone boulders, these opals often feature dark or black rock matrix, with veins or patches of bright striking gem colours running through them.
More than the 4 Cs
If you're looking to purchase a gold opal necklace or one set in fine quality sterling silver, there are several factors to consider before you hit the 'buy' button. Firstly, opal comes in all colours of the rainbow, and the ones you choose are your own personal preference. But did you know certain colours are more valuable than others? Red is the most highly prized (especially in a Lightning Ridge black opal) and blue is generally the most common opal colour you will find - but can still valuable depending on a range of other factors. An opal's 'play of colour' is the way the gem reflects and refracts light, creating a captivating display of vibrant hues in dazzling patterns. Look for opal necklaces with a strong, vivid play of colour, as this is a good indicator of their quality and beauty, as well as a good pattern arrangement.
Opals can vary in their clarity, with some containing natural inclusions or internal fractures and, while these characteristics are part of the gemstone's natural formation, stones with minimal inclusions are generally considered better quality and more valuable. However, some may display unique patterns or formations within their structure that add to their individuality and appeal. Body tones ranging from dark to light and translucent/transparent are also a consideration, as is the gem's brightness, brilliance, size and carat weight, and cut and shape.
